Summary: "Journey to the West" by Wu Cheng En (circa. 1500 -1580, Ming Dynasty) is one of the so-called Four Great Novels of Chinese Classic literature. The novel is a mythical account of the journey of a Buddhist monk, Xuan Zang of Dang Dynasty (circa. 650 AD) who traveled on foot from the capital city of Chang An to India and brought back Suttra (sacred Buddhist scriptures) to China. In 1942, Arthur Waley translated an abridged version of the work titled "Monkey".
